For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:

But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.

For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:
4 ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– καθὼς — καθὼς just–as δεδοκιμάσμεθα — δεδοκιμάσμεθα we–have–been–approved ὑπὸ — ὑπὸ by τοῦ — τοῦ the Θεοῦ, — Θεοῦ, God πιστευθῆναι — πιστευθῆναι to–be–entrusted τὸ — τὸ the εὐαγγέλιον, — εὐαγγέλιον, good–news οὕτως — οὕτως thus λαλοῦμεν; — λαλοῦμεν; we–speak οὐχ — οὐχ not ὡς — ὡς as ἀνθρώποις — ἀνθρώποις to–men ἀρέσκοντες, — ἀρέσκοντες, pleasing ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– Θεῷ, — Θεῷ, to–God τῷ — τῷ the δοκιμάζοντι — δοκιμάζοντι testing τὰς — τὰς the καρδίας — καρδίας hearts ἡμῶν. — ἡμῶν. of–us
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:

Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.
7 ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– ἐγενήθημεν — ἐγενήθημεν we–became ἤπιοι — ἤπιοι gentle ἐν — ἐν in μέσῳ — μέσῳ midst ὑμῶν, — ὑμῶν, of–you ὡς — ὡς as ἐὰν — ἐὰν when τροφὸς — τροφὸς nursing–mother θάλπῃ — θάλπῃ cherishes τὰ — τὰ the ἑαυτῆς — ἑαυτῆς of–her τέκνα. — τέκνα. children
But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:
8 οὕτως — οὕτως thus ὁμειρόμενοι — ὁμειρόμενοι longing ὑμῶν, — ὑμῶν, for–you εὐδοκοῦμεν — εὐδοκοῦμεν we–were–pleased μεταδοῦναι — μεταδοῦναι to–share ὑμῖν, — ὑμῖν, with–you οὐ — οὐ not μόνον — μόνον only τὸ — τὸ the εὐαγγέλιον — εὐαγγέλιον good–news τοῦ — τοῦ of–the Θεοῦ, — Θεοῦ, God ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– καὶ — καὶ also– τὰς — τὰς the ἑαυτῶν — ἑαυτῶν of–ourselves ψυχάς, — ψυχάς, souls διότι — διότι because ἀγαπητοὶ — ἀγαπητοὶ beloved ἡμῖν — ἡμῖν to–us ἐγενήθητε. — ἐγενήθητε. you–became
So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:
11 καθάπερ — καθάπερ just–as οἴδατε — οἴδατε you–know ὡς — ὡς how ἕνα — ἕνα each ἕκαστον — ἕκαστον one ὑμῶν, — ὑμῶν, of–you ὡς — ὡς as πατὴρ — πατὴρ father τέκνα — τέκνα children ἑαυτοῦ, — ἑαυτοῦ, of–himself
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
12 παρακαλοῦντες — παρακαλοῦντες exhorting ὑμᾶς, — ὑμᾶς, you καὶ — καὶ and– παραμυθούμενοι, — παραμυθούμενοι, encouraging καὶ — καὶ and– μαρτυρόμενοι, — μαρτυρόμενοι, testifying εἰς — εἰς for τὸ — τὸ the περιπατεῖν — περιπατεῖν to–walk ὑμᾶς — ὑμᾶς you ἀξίως — ἀξίως worthily τοῦ — τοῦ of–the Θεοῦ, — Θεοῦ, God τοῦ — τοῦ the καλοῦντος — καλοῦντος calling ὑμᾶς — ὑμᾶς you εἰς — εἰς into τὴν — τὴν the ἑαυτοῦ — ἑαυτοῦ of–himself βασιλείαν — βασιλείαν kingdom καὶ — καὶ and– δόξαν. — δόξαν. glory
That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
14 ὑμεῖς — ὑμεῖς you γὰρ, — γὰρ, for– μιμηταὶ — μιμηταὶ imitators ἐγενήθητε, — ἐγενήθητε, became ἀδελφοί, — ἀδελφοί, brothers τῶν — τῶν of–the ἐκκλησιῶν — ἐκκλησιῶν churches τοῦ — τοῦ of–the Θεοῦ, — Θεοῦ, God τῶν — τῶν the οὐσῶν — οὐσῶν being ἐν — ἐν in τῇ — τῇ the Ἰουδαίᾳ, — Ἰουδαίᾳ, Judaea ἐν — ἐν in Χριστῷ — Χριστῷ Christos Ἰησοῦ. — Ἰησοῦ. Iēsous ὅτι — ὅτι because τὰ — τὰ the αὐτὰ — αὐτὰ same ἐπάθετε, — ἐπάθετε, you–suffered καὶ — καὶ also– ὑμεῖς — ὑμεῖς you ὑπὸ — ὑπὸ by τῶν — τῶν the ἰδίων — ἰδίων own συμφυλετῶν, — συμφυλετῶν, countrymen καθὼς — καθὼς just–as καὶ — καὶ also– αὐτοὶ — αὐτοὶ they ὑπὸ — ὑπὸ by τῶν — τῶν the Ἰουδαίων, — Ἰουδαίων, Judeans
For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
15 τῶν — τῶν the καὶ — καὶ both– τὸν — τὸν the Κύριον — Κύριον Lord ἀποκτεινάντων, — ἀποκτεινάντων, having–killed Ἰησοῦν, — Ἰησοῦν, Iēsous καὶ — καὶ and– τοὺς — τοὺς the προφήτας; — προφήτας; prophets καὶ — καὶ and– ἡμᾶς — ἡμᾶς us ἐκδιωξάντων; — ἐκδιωξάντων; having–driven–out καὶ — καὶ and– Θεῷ — Θεῷ God μὴ — μὴ not ἀρεσκόντων; — ἀρεσκόντων; pleasing καὶ — καὶ and– πᾶσιν — πᾶσιν to–all ἀνθρώποις — ἀνθρώποις men ἐναντίων, — ἐναντίων, contrary
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
16 κωλυόντων — κωλυόντων hindering ἡμᾶς — ἡμᾶς us τοῖς — τοῖς to–the ἔθνεσιν — ἔθνεσιν nations λαλῆσαι, — λαλῆσαι, to–speak ἵνα — ἵνα that σωθῶσιν, — σωθῶσιν, they–may–be–saved εἰς — εἰς for– τὸ — τὸ the ἀναπληρῶσαι — ἀναπληρῶσαι to–fill–up αὐτῶν — αὐτῶν of–them τὰς — τὰς the ἁμαρτίας — ἁμαρτίας sins πάντοτε. — πάντοτε. always ἔφθασεν — ἔφθασεν has–come δὲ — δὲ but– ἐπ’ — ἐπ’ upon αὐτοὺς — αὐτοὺς them ἡ — ἡ the ὀργὴ — ὀργὴ wrath εἰς — εἰς to τέλος. — τέλος. end
Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
17 Ἡμεῖς — Ἡμεῖς we δέ, — δέ, but– ἀδελφοί, — ἀδελφοί, brothers ἀπορφανισθέντες — ἀπορφανισθέντες having–been–orphaned ἀφ’ — ἀφ’ from ὑμῶν, — ὑμῶν, you πρὸς — πρὸς for καιρὸν — καιρὸν season ὥρας, — ὥρας, of–hour προσώπῳ, — προσώπῳ, in–face οὐ — οὐ not καρδίᾳ, — καρδίᾳ, in–heart περισσοτέρως — περισσοτέρως more–abundantly ἐσπουδάσαμεν, — ἐσπουδάσαμεν, were–eager τὸ — τὸ the πρόσωπον — πρόσωπον face ὑμῶν — ὑμῶν of–you ἰδεῖν — ἰδεῖν to–see ἐν — ἐν in πολλῇ — πολλῇ much ἐπιθυμίᾳ. — ἐπιθυμίᾳ. desire
But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
18 διότι — διότι because ἠθελήσαμεν — ἠθελήσαμεν we–wanted ἐλθεῖν — ἐλθεῖν to–come πρὸς — πρὸς to ὑμᾶς, — ὑμᾶς, you ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I μὲν — μὲν indeed– Παῦλος; — Παῦλος; Paulos καὶ — καὶ both– ἅπαξ — ἅπαξ once καὶ — καὶ and– δίς, — δίς, twice καὶ — καὶ and– ἐνέκοψεν — ἐνέκοψεν hindered ἡμᾶς — ἡμᾶς us ὁ — ὁ the Σατανᾶς. — Σατανᾶς. Satan
Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

For ye are our glory and joy.
