But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל — וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל and–he–prayed אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– יְהוָ֜ה — יְהוָ֜ה YHWH וַיֹּאמַ֗ר — וַיֹּאמַ֗ר and–said אָנָּ֤ה — אָנָּ֤ה please יְהוָה֙ — יְהוָה֙ YHWH הֲלוֹא־ — הֲלוֹא־ was–not– זֶ֣ה — זֶ֣ה this דְבָרִ֗י — דְבָרִ֗י my–word עַד־ — עַד־ while– הֱיוֹתִי֙ — הֱיוֹתִי֙ I–was עַל־ — עַל־ on– אַדְמָתִ֔י — אַדְמָתִ֔י my–land עַל־ — עַל־ therefore– כֵּ֥ן — כֵּ֥ן so קִדַּ֖מְתִּי — קִדַּ֖מְתִּי I–fled–beforehand לִבְרֹ֣חַ — לִבְרֹ֣חַ to–flee תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה — תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה to–Tarshish כִּ֣י — כִּ֣י for יָדַ֗עְתִּי — יָדַ֗עְתִּי I–knew כִּ֤י — כִּ֤י that אַתָּה֙ — אַתָּה֙ you אֵֽל־ — אֵֽל־ are–an–El– חַנּ֣וּן — חַנּ֣וּן gracious וְרַח֔וּם — וְרַח֔וּם and–compassionate אֶ֤רֶךְ — אֶ֤רֶךְ slow–of אַפַּ֙יִם֙ — אַפַּ֙יִם֙ anger וְרַב־ — וְרַב־ and–great–of– חֶ֔סֶד — חֶ֔סֶד lovingkindness וְנִחָ֖ם — וְנִחָ֖ם and–relenting עַל־ — עַל־ concerning– הָרָעָֽה׃ — הָרָעָֽה׃ the–evil
And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
3 וְעַתָּ֣ה — וְעַתָּ֣ה and–now יְהוָ֔ה — יְהוָ֔ה YHWH קַח־ — קַח־ take– נָ֥א — נָ֥א please אֶת־ — אֶת־ – נַפְשִׁ֖י — נַפְשִׁ֖י my–life מִמֶּ֑נִּי — מִמֶּ֑נִּי from–me כִּ֛י — כִּ֛י for ט֥וֹב — ט֥וֹב better מוֹתִ֖י — מוֹתִ֖י is–my–death מֵחַיָּֽי׃ — מֵחַיָּֽי׃ than–my–life ס — ס [pause]
Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר — וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and–said יְהוָ֔ה — יְהוָ֔ה YHWH הַהֵיטֵ֖ב — הַהֵיטֵ֖ב is–it–rightly חָ֥רָה — חָ֥רָה it–burns לָֽךְ׃ — לָֽךְ׃ to–you
Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
5 וַיֵּצֵ֤א — וַיֵּצֵ֤א and–went–out יוֹנָה֙ — יוֹנָה֙ Yonah מִן־ — מִן־ from– הָעִ֔יר — הָעִ֔יר the–city וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב — וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב and–sat מִקֶּ֣דֶם — מִקֶּ֣דֶם east–of לָעִ֑יר — לָעִ֑יר the–city וַיַּעַשׂ֩ — וַיַּעַשׂ֩ and–made ל֨וֹ — ל֨וֹ for–himself שָׁ֜ם — שָׁ֜ם there סֻכָּ֗ה — סֻכָּ֗ה a–booth וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב — וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב and–sat תַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙ — תַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙ under–it בַּצֵּ֔ל — בַּצֵּ֔ל in–the–shade עַ֚ד — עַ֚ד until אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר that יִרְאֶ֔ה — יִרְאֶ֔ה he–would–see מַה־ — מַה־ what– יִּהְיֶ֖ה — יִּהְיֶ֖ה would–be בָּעִֽיר׃ — בָּעִֽיר׃ in–the–city
So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
6 וַיְמַ֣ן — וַיְמַ֣ן and–appointed יְהוָֽה־ — יְהוָֽה־ YHWH– אֱ֠לֹהִים — אֱ֠לֹהִים God קִיקָי֞וֹן — קִיקָי֞וֹן a–plant וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ — וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ and–it–came–up מֵעַ֣ל — מֵעַ֣ל from–above לְיוֹנָ֗ה — לְיוֹנָ֗ה over–Yonah לִֽהְי֥וֹת — לִֽהְי֥וֹת to–be צֵל֙ — צֵל֙ shade עַל־ — עַל־ over– רֹאשׁ֔וֹ — רֹאשׁ֔וֹ his–head לְהַצִּ֥יל — לְהַצִּ֥יל to–deliver ל֖וֹ — ל֖וֹ him מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ — מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ from–his–distress וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח — וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח and–rejoiced יוֹנָ֛ה — יוֹנָ֛ה Yonah עַל־ — עַל־ over– הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן — הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן the–plant שִׂמְחָ֥ה — שִׂמְחָ֥ה a–joy גְדוֹלָֽה׃ — גְדוֹלָֽה׃ great
And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
7 וַיְמַ֤ן — וַיְמַ֤ן and–appointed הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ — הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ the–God תּוֹלַ֔עַת — תּוֹלַ֔עַת a–worm בַּעֲל֥וֹת — בַּעֲל֥וֹת at–the–rising–of הַשַּׁ֖חַר — הַשַּׁ֖חַר the–dawn לַֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת — לַֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת on–the–next–day וַתַּ֥ךְ — וַתַּ֥ךְ and–it–struck אֶת־ — אֶת־ – הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן — הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן the–plant וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃ — וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃ and–it–withered
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
8 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ — וַיְהִ֣י ׀ and–it–was כִּזְרֹ֣חַ — כִּזְרֹ֣חַ at–the–rising–of הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ — הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ the–sun וַיְמַ֨ן — וַיְמַ֨ן and–appointed אֱלֹהִ֜ים — אֱלֹהִ֜ים God ר֤וּחַ — ר֤וּחַ a–wind קָדִים֙ — קָדִים֙ east חֲרִישִׁ֔ית — חֲרִישִׁ֔ית scorching וַתַּ֥ךְ — וַתַּ֥ךְ and–struck הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ — הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ the–sun עַל־ — עַל־ on– רֹ֥אשׁ — רֹ֥אשׁ the–head–of יוֹנָ֖ה — יוֹנָ֖ה Yonah וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף — וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף and–he–fainted וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל — וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל and–asked אֶת־ — אֶת־ – נַפְשׁוֹ֙ — נַפְשׁוֹ֙ his–soul לָמ֔וּת — לָמ֔וּת to–die וַיֹּ֕אמֶר — וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and–said ט֥וֹב — ט֥וֹב better מוֹתִ֖י — מוֹתִ֖י is–my–death מֵחַיָּֽי׃ — מֵחַיָּֽי׃ than–my–life
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–said אֱלֹהִים֙ — אֱלֹהִים֙ God אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– יוֹנָ֔ה — יוֹנָ֔ה Yonah הַהֵיטֵ֥ב — הַהֵיטֵ֥ב is–it–rightly חָרָֽה־ — חָרָֽה־ it–burns– לְךָ֖ — לְךָ֖ to–you עַל־ — עַל־ concerning– הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן — הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן the–plant וַיֹּ֕אמֶר — וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and–he–said הֵיטֵ֥ב — הֵיטֵ֥ב rightly חָֽרָה־ — חָֽרָה־ it–burns– לִ֖י — לִ֖י to–me עַד־ — עַד־ unto– מָֽוֶת׃ — מָֽוֶת׃ death
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
10 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר — וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and–said יְהוָ֔ה — יְהוָ֔ה YHWH אַתָּ֥ה — אַתָּ֥ה you חַ֙סְתָּ֙ — חַ֙סְתָּ֙ had–pity עַל־ — עַל־ on– הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן — הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן the–plant אֲשֶׁ֛ר — אֲשֶׁ֛ר which לֹא־ — לֹא־ not– עָמַ֥לְתָּ — עָמַ֥לְתָּ you–labored בּ֖וֹ — בּ֖וֹ for–it וְלֹ֣א — וְלֹ֣א and–not גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ — גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ you–made–it–grow שֶׁבִּן־ — שֶׁבִּן־ which–son–of– לַ֥יְלָה — לַ֥יְלָה a–night הָיָ֖ה — הָיָ֖ה it–came–to–be וּבִן־ — וּבִן־ and–son–of– לַ֥יְלָה — לַ֥יְלָה a–night אָבָֽד׃ — אָבָֽד׃ it–perished
Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
11 וַֽאֲנִי֙ — וַֽאֲנִי֙ and–I לֹ֣א — לֹ֣א not אָח֔וּס — אָח֔וּס should–I–have–pity עַל־ — עַל־ on– נִינְוֵ֖ה — נִינְוֵ֖ה Nineveh הָעִ֣יר — הָעִ֣יר the–city הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה — הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה the–great אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר in–which יֶשׁ־ — יֶשׁ־ there–are– בָּ֡הּ — בָּ֡הּ in–it הַרְבֵּה֩ — הַרְבֵּה֩ more–than– מִֽשְׁתֵּים־ — מִֽשְׁתֵּים־ twelve– עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה — עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה ten רִבּ֜וֹ — רִבּ֜וֹ thousand אָדָ֗ם — אָדָ֗ם persons אֲשֶׁ֤ר — אֲשֶׁ֤ר who לֹֽא־ — לֹֽא־ not– יָדַע֙ — יָדַע֙ know בֵּין־ — בֵּין־ between– יְמִינ֣וֹ — יְמִינ֣וֹ their–right–hand לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ — לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ to–their–left–hand וּבְהֵמָ֖ה — וּבְהֵמָ֖ה and–cattle רַבָּֽה׃ — רַבָּֽה׃ many
And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
