Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly,
2 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר — וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and–he–said קָ֠רָאתִי — קָ֠רָאתִי I–called מִצָּ֥רָה — מִצָּ֥רָה from–my–distress לִ֛י — לִ֛י to–me אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– יְהוָ֖ה — יְהוָ֖ה YHWH וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי — וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי and–he–answered–me מִבֶּ֧טֶן — מִבֶּ֧טֶן from–the–belly–of שְׁא֛וֹל — שְׁא֛וֹל Sheol שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי — שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי I–cried–for–help שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ — שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ you–heard קוֹלִֽי׃ — קוֹלִֽי׃ my–voice
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי — וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי and–you–cast–me מְצוּלָה֙ — מְצוּלָה֙ into–the–deep בִּלְבַ֣ב — בִּלְבַ֣ב into–the–heart–of יַמִּ֔ים — יַמִּ֔ים the–seas וְנָהָ֖ר — וְנָהָ֖ר and–the–current יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי — יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי surrounded–me כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ — מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ your–breakers וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ — וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ and–your–waves עָלַ֥י — עָלַ֥י over–me עָבָֽרוּ׃ — עָבָֽרוּ׃ passed
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4 וַאֲנִ֣י — וַאֲנִ֣י and–I אָמַ֔רְתִּי — אָמַ֔רְתִּי said נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי — נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי I–am–driven–out מִנֶּ֣גֶד — מִנֶּ֣גֶד from–before עֵינֶ֑יךָ — עֵינֶ֑יךָ your–eyes אַ֚ךְ — אַ֚ךְ yet אוֹסִ֣יף — אוֹסִ֣יף I–will–again לְהַבִּ֔יט — לְהַבִּ֔יט look אֶל־ — אֶל־ toward– הֵיכַ֖ל — הֵיכַ֖ל the–temple–of קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ — קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ your–holiness
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 אֲפָפ֤וּנִי — אֲפָפ֤וּנִי engulfed–me מַ֙יִם֙ — מַ֙יִם֙ waters עַד־ — עַד־ unto– נֶ֔פֶשׁ — נֶ֔פֶשׁ my–life תְּה֖וֹם — תְּה֖וֹם the–deep יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי — יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי surrounded–me ס֖וּף — ס֖וּף seaweed חָב֥וּשׁ — חָב֥וּשׁ was–wrapped לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃ — לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃ around–my–head
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 לְקִצְבֵ֤י — לְקִצְבֵ֤י to–the–roots–of הָרִים֙ — הָרִים֙ the–mountains יָרַ֔דְתִּי — יָרַ֔דְתִּי I–went–down הָאָ֛רֶץ — הָאָ֛רֶץ the–earth בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ — בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ its–bars בַעֲדִ֖י — בַעֲדִ֖י around–me לְעוֹלָ֑ם — לְעוֹלָ֑ם forever וַתַּ֧עַל — וַתַּ֧עַל but–you–brought–up מִשַּׁ֛חַת — מִשַּׁ֛חַת from–the–pit חַיַּ֖י — חַיַּ֖י my–life יְהוָ֥ה — יְהוָ֥ה YHWH אֱלֹהָֽי׃ — אֱלֹהָֽי׃ my–God
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
7 בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף — בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף when–fainted עָלַי֙ — עָלַי֙ within–me נַפְשִׁ֔י — נַפְשִׁ֔י my–soul אֶת־ — אֶת־ – יְהוָ֖ה — יְהוָ֖ה YHWH זָכָ֑רְתִּי — זָכָ֑רְתִּי I–remembered וַתָּב֤וֹא — וַתָּב֤וֹא and–came אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ — אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ to–you תְּפִלָּתִ֔י — תְּפִלָּתִ֔י my–prayer אֶל־ — אֶל־ into– הֵיכַ֖ל — הֵיכַ֖ל the–temple–of קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ — קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ your–holiness
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8 מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים — מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים those–who–cling–to הַבְלֵי־ — הַבְלֵי־ vanities–of– שָׁ֑וְא — שָׁ֑וְא emptiness חַסְדָּ֖ם — חַסְדָּ֖ם their–loyalty יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ — יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ they–forsake
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 וַאֲנִ֗י — וַאֲנִ֗י but–I בְּק֤וֹל — בְּק֤וֹל with–a–voice–of תּוֹדָה֙ — תּוֹדָה֙ thanksgiving אֶזְבְּחָה־ — אֶזְבְּחָה־ will–sacrifice– לָּ֔ךְ — לָּ֔ךְ to–you אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר what נָדַ֖רְתִּי — נָדַ֖רְתִּי I–vowed אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה — אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה I–will–pay יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה — יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה salvation לַיהוָֽה׃ — לַיהוָֽה׃ belongs–to–YHWH ס — ס [pause]
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
10 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר — וַיֹּ֥אמֶר and–said יְהוָ֖ה — יְהוָ֖ה YHWH לַדָּ֑ג — לַדָּ֑ג to–the–fish וַיָּקֵ֥א — וַיָּקֵ֥א and–it–vomited אֶת־ — אֶת־ – יוֹנָ֖ה — יוֹנָ֖ה Yonah אֶל־ — אֶל־ onto– הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ — הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ the–dry–land פ — פ [paragraph]
And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
