Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 νυνὶ — νυνὶ but–now δὲ — δὲ but– κατηργήθημεν — κατηργήθημεν we–were–released ἀπὸ — ἀπὸ from– τοῦ — τοῦ the– νόμου, — νόμου, law ἀποθανόντες — ἀποθανόντες having–died ἐν — ἐν in– ᾧ — ᾧ which κατειχόμεθα, — κατειχόμεθα, we–were–held ὥστε — ὥστε so–as– δουλεύειν — δουλεύειν to–serve ἡμᾶς — ἡμᾶς us ἐν — ἐν in– καινότητι — καινότητι newness πνεύματος, — πνεύματος, of–spirit καὶ — καὶ and– οὐ — οὐ not– παλαιότητι — παλαιότητι in–oldness γράμματος. — γράμματος. of–letter
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 ἀφορμὴν — ἀφορμὴν opportunity δὲ — δὲ but– λαβοῦσα — λαβοῦσα having–taken ἡ — ἡ the– ἁμαρτία, — ἁμαρτία, sin διὰ — διὰ through– τῆς — τῆς the– ἐντολῆς, — ἐντολῆς, commandment κατειργάσατο — κατειργάσατο produced ἐν — ἐν in– ἐμοὶ — ἐμοὶ me πᾶσαν — πᾶσαν all ἐπιθυμίαν; — ἐπιθυμίαν; covetousness χωρὶς — χωρὶς apart–from γὰρ — γὰρ for– νόμου, — νόμου, law ἁμαρτία — ἁμαρτία sin νεκρά. — νεκρά. dead
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I δὲ — δὲ but– ἔζων — ἔζων was–living χωρὶς — χωρὶς apart–from νόμου — νόμου law ποτέ; — ποτέ; once ἐλθούσης — ἐλθούσης having–come δὲ — δὲ but– τῆς — τῆς the– ἐντολῆς, — ἐντολῆς, commandment ἡ — ἡ the– ἁμαρτία — ἁμαρτία sin ἀνέζησεν, — ἀνέζησεν, came–alive ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I δὲ — δὲ but– ἀπέθανον. — ἀπέθανον. died
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10 καὶ — καὶ and– εὑρέθη — εὑρέθη was–found μοι — μοι to–me ἡ — ἡ the– ἐντολὴ, — ἐντολὴ, commandment ἡ — ἡ the– εἰς — εἰς for– ζωὴν, — ζωὴν, life αὕτη — αὕτη this εἰς — εἰς for– θάνατον. — θάνατον. death
And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12 ὥστε — ὥστε so–that– ὁ — ὁ the– μὲν — μὲν indeed– νόμος — νόμος law ἅγιος, — ἅγιος, holy καὶ — καὶ and– ἡ — ἡ the– ἐντολὴ — ἐντολὴ commandment ἁγία, — ἁγία, holy καὶ — καὶ and– δικαία, — δικαία, righteous καὶ — καὶ and– ἀγαθή. — ἀγαθή. good
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13 Τὸ — Τὸ The– οὖν — οὖν then– ἀγαθὸν, — ἀγαθὸν, good ἐμοὶ — ἐμοὶ to–me ἐγένετο — ἐγένετο became θάνατος? — θάνατος? death μὴ — μὴ not– γένοιτο! — γένοιτο! may–it–be ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– ἡ — ἡ the– ἁμαρτία, — ἁμαρτία, sin ἵνα — ἵνα so–that– φανῇ — φανῇ might–be–shown ἁμαρτία, — ἁμαρτία, sin διὰ — διὰ through– τοῦ — τοῦ the– ἀγαθοῦ — ἀγαθοῦ good μοι, — μοι, to–me κατεργαζομένη — κατεργαζομένη producing θάνατον; — θάνατον; death ἵνα — ἵνα so–that– γένηται — γένηται might–become καθ’ — καθ’ beyond– ὑπερβολὴν — ὑπερβολὴν measure ἁμαρτωλὸς, — ἁμαρτωλὸς, sinful ἡ — ἡ the– ἁμαρτία — ἁμαρτία sin διὰ — διὰ through– τῆς — τῆς the– ἐντολῆς. — ἐντολῆς. commandment
Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14 οἴδαμεν — οἴδαμεν we–know γὰρ — γὰρ for– ὅτι — ὅτι that– ὁ — ὁ the– νόμος — νόμος law πνευματικός — πνευματικός spiritual ἐστιν; — ἐστιν; is ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I δὲ — δὲ but– σάρκινός — σάρκινός fleshly εἰμι, — εἰμι, am πεπραμένος — πεπραμένος having–been–sold ὑπὸ — ὑπὸ under– τὴν — τὴν the– ἁμαρτίαν. — ἁμαρτίαν. sin
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 ὃ — ὃ what γὰρ — γὰρ for– κατεργάζομαι, — κατεργάζομαι, I–accomplish οὐ — οὐ not– γινώσκω; — γινώσκω; I–know οὐ — οὐ not– γὰρ — γὰρ for– ὃ — ὃ what θέλω, — θέλω, I–want τοῦτο — τοῦτο this πράσσω; — πράσσω; I–practice ἀλλ’ — ἀλλ’ but– ὃ — ὃ what μισῶ, — μισῶ, I–hate τοῦτο — τοῦτο this ποιῶ. — ποιῶ. I–do
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 εἰ — εἰ if– δὲ — δὲ but– ὃ — ὃ what οὐ — οὐ not– θέλω, — θέλω, I–want τοῦτο — τοῦτο this ποιῶ, — ποιῶ, I–do σύμφημι — σύμφημι I–agree–with τῷ — τῷ the– νόμῳ, — νόμῳ, law ὅτι — ὅτι that– καλός. — καλός. good
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 οἶδα — οἶδα I–know γὰρ — γὰρ for– ὅτι — ὅτι that– οὐκ — οὐκ not– οἰκεῖ — οἰκεῖ dwells ἐν — ἐν in– ἐμοί, — ἐμοί, me τοῦτ’ — τοῦτ’ this– ἔστιν — ἔστιν is ἐν — ἐν in– τῇ — τῇ the– σαρκί — σαρκί flesh μου -- — μου -- of–me ἀγαθόν -- — ἀγαθόν -- good τὸ — τὸ the– γὰρ — γὰρ for– θέλειν — θέλειν to–will παράκειταί — παράκειταί is–present μοι, — μοι, with–me τὸ — τὸ the– δὲ — δὲ but– κατεργάζεσθαι — κατεργάζεσθαι to–accomplish τὸ — τὸ the– καλὸν, — καλὸν, good οὔ. — οὔ. not
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 οὐ — οὐ not– γὰρ — γὰρ for– ὃ — ὃ what θέλω, — θέλω, I–want ποιῶ — ποιῶ I–do ἀγαθόν; — ἀγαθόν; good ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– ὃ — ὃ what οὐ — οὐ not– θέλω — θέλω I–want κακὸν, — κακὸν, evil τοῦτο — τοῦτο this πράσσω. — πράσσω. I–practice
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 εἰ — εἰ if– δὲ — δὲ but– ὃ — ὃ what οὐ — οὐ not– θέλω, — θέλω, I–want ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I τοῦτο — τοῦτο this ποιῶ, — ποιῶ, do οὐκέτι — οὐκέτι no–longer ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I κατεργάζομαι — κατεργάζομαι accomplish αὐτὸ, — αὐτὸ, it ἀλλὰ — ἀλλὰ but– ἡ — ἡ the– οἰκοῦσα — οἰκοῦσα dwelling ἐν — ἐν in– ἐμοὶ — ἐμοὶ me ἁμαρτία. — ἁμαρτία. sin
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 συνήδομαι — συνήδομαι I–delight γὰρ — γὰρ for– τῷ — τῷ in–the– νόμῳ — νόμῳ law τοῦ — τοῦ of–the– Θεοῦ, — Θεοῦ, God κατὰ — κατὰ according–to– τὸν — τὸν the– ἔσω — ἔσω inner ἄνθρωπον; — ἄνθρωπον; man
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 Ταλαίπωρος — Ταλαίπωρος Wretched ἐγὼ — ἐγὼ I ἄνθρωπος! — ἄνθρωπος! man τίς — τίς who με — με me ῥύσεται, — ῥύσεται, will–deliver ἐκ — ἐκ from– τοῦ — τοῦ the– σώματος — σώματος body τοῦ — τοῦ of–the– θανάτου — θανάτου death τούτου? — τούτου? this
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
