So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2 וְשַׁבֵּ֧חַ — וְשַׁבֵּ֧חַ and–I–praised אֲנִ֛י — אֲנִ֛י I אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– הַמֵּתִ֖ים — הַמֵּתִ֖ים the–dead שֶׁכְּבָ֣ר — שֶׁכְּבָ֣ר that–already מֵ֑תוּ — מֵ֑תוּ died מִן־ — מִן־ over– הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים — הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים the–living אֲשֶׁ֛ר — אֲשֶׁ֛ר who הֵ֥מָּה — הֵ֥מָּה they חַיִּ֖ים — חַיִּ֖ים living עֲדֶֽנָה׃ — עֲדֶֽנָה׃ still
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3 וְטוֹב֙ — וְטוֹב֙ and–better-than מִשְּׁנֵיהֶ֔ם — מִשְּׁנֵיהֶ֔ם both-of–them אֵ֥ת — אֵ֥ת [obj] אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ who– עֲדֶ֖ן — עֲדֶ֖ן yet לֹ֣א — לֹ֣א not הָיָ֑ה — הָיָ֑ה was אֲשֶׁ֤ר — אֲשֶׁ֤ר who לֹֽא־ — לֹֽא־ not– רָאָה֙ — רָאָה֙ saw אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה — הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה the–work הָרָ֔ע — הָרָ֔ע the–evil אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר that נַעֲשָׂ֖ה — נַעֲשָׂ֖ה is–done תַּ֥חַת — תַּ֥חַת under הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ — הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the–sun
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 וְרָאִ֨יתִֽי — וְרָאִ֨יתִֽי and–I–saw אֲנִ֜י — אֲנִ֜י I אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– עָמָ֗ל — עָמָ֗ל toil וְאֵת֙ — וְאֵת֙ and–[obj] כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– כִּשְׁר֣וֹן — כִּשְׁר֣וֹן skill-of הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה — הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה the–work כִּ֛י — כִּ֛י that הִ֥יא — הִ֥יא it קִנְאַת־ — קִנְאַת־ envy-of– אִ֖ישׁ — אִ֖ישׁ man מֵרֵעֵ֑הוּ — מֵרֵעֵ֑הוּ from–his–neighbor גַּם־ — גַּם־ also– זֶ֥ה — זֶ֥ה this הֶ֖בֶל — הֶ֖בֶל vapor וּרְע֥וּת — וּרְע֥וּת and–striving-after רֽוּחַ׃ — רֽוּחַ׃ wind
Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5 הַכְּסִיל֙ — הַכְּסִיל֙ the–fool חֹבֵ֣ק — חֹבֵ֣ק folding אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– יָדָ֔יו — יָדָ֔יו his–hands וְאֹכֵ֖ל — וְאֹכֵ֖ל and–eating אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– בְּשָׂרֽוֹ׃ — בְּשָׂרֽוֹ׃ his–flesh
The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 ט֕וֹב — ט֕וֹב better מְלֹ֥א — מְלֹ֥א full-of כַ֖ף — כַ֖ף palm נָ֑חַת — נָ֑חַת rest מִמְּלֹ֥א — מִמְּלֹ֥א than–full-of חָפְנַ֛יִם — חָפְנַ֛יִם two-fists עָמָ֖ל — עָמָ֖ל toil וּרְע֥וּת — וּרְע֥וּת and–striving-after רֽוּחַ׃ — רֽוּחַ׃ wind
Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7 וְשַׁ֧בְתִּי — וְשַׁ֧בְתִּי and–I–turned אֲנִ֛י — אֲנִ֛י I וָאֶרְאֶ֥ה — וָאֶרְאֶ֥ה and–I–saw הֶ֖בֶל — הֶ֖בֶל vapor תַּ֥חַת — תַּ֥חַת under הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ — הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ the–sun
Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 יֵ֣שׁ — יֵ֣שׁ there-is אֶחָד֩ — אֶחָד֩ one וְאֵ֨ין — וְאֵ֨ין and–there-is-no שֵׁנִ֜י — שֵׁנִ֜י second גַּ֣ם — גַּ֣ם also בֵּ֧ן — בֵּ֧ן son וָאָ֣ח — וָאָ֣ח and–brother אֵֽין־ — אֵֽין־ there-is-no– ל֗וֹ — ל֗וֹ to–him וְאֵ֥ין — וְאֵ֥ין and–there-is-no קֵץ֙ — קֵץ֙ end לְכָל־ — לְכָל־ to–all– עֲמָל֔וֹ — עֲמָל֔וֹ his–toil גַּם־ — גַּם־ also– [עיניו] — [עיניו] [ketiv] (עֵינ֖וֹ) — (עֵינ֖וֹ) his–eye לֹא־ — לֹא־ not– תִשְׂבַּ֣ע — תִשְׂבַּ֣ע satisfied עֹ֑שֶׁר — עֹ֑שֶׁר riches וּלְמִ֣י ׀ — וּלְמִ֣י ׀ and–for–whom אֲנִ֣י — אֲנִ֣י I עָמֵ֗ל — עָמֵ֗ל toiling וּמְחַסֵּ֤ר — וּמְחַסֵּ֤ר and–depriving אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– נַפְשִׁי֙ — נַפְשִׁי֙ my–soul מִטּוֹבָ֔ה — מִטּוֹבָ֔ה from–good גַּם־ — גַּם־ also– זֶ֥ה — זֶ֥ה this הֶ֛בֶל — הֶ֛בֶל vapor וְעִנְיַ֥ן — וְעִנְיַ֥ן and–task רָ֖ע — רָ֖ע evil הֽוּא׃ — הֽוּא׃ it
There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9 טוֹבִ֥ים — טוֹבִ֥ים better הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם — הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם the–two מִן־ — מִן־ than– הָאֶחָ֑ד — הָאֶחָ֑ד the–one אֲשֶׁ֧ר — אֲשֶׁ֧ר who יֵשׁ־ — יֵשׁ־ there-is– לָהֶ֛ם — לָהֶ֛ם to–them שָׂכָ֥ר — שָׂכָ֥ר reward ט֖וֹב — ט֖וֹב good בַּעֲמָלָֽם׃ — בַּעֲמָלָֽם׃ in–their–toil
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 כִּ֣י — כִּ֣י for אִם־ — אִם־ if– יִפֹּ֔לוּ — יִפֹּ֔לוּ they–fall הָאֶחָ֖ד — הָאֶחָ֖ד the–one יָקִ֣ים — יָקִ֣ים will–raise אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– חֲבֵר֑וֹ — חֲבֵר֑וֹ his–companion וְאִ֣יל֗וֹ — וְאִ֣יל֗וֹ and–woe–to–him הָֽאֶחָד֙ — הָֽאֶחָד֙ the–one שֶׁיִּפּ֔וֹל — שֶׁיִּפּ֔וֹל that–falls וְאֵ֥ין — וְאֵ֥ין and–there-is-no שֵׁנִ֖י — שֵׁנִ֖י second לַהֲקִימֽוֹ׃ — לַהֲקִימֽוֹ׃ to–raise–him
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11 גַּ֛ם — גַּ֛ם also אִם־ — אִם־ if– יִשְׁכְּב֥וּ — יִשְׁכְּב֥וּ lie שְׁנַ֖יִם — שְׁנַ֖יִם two וְחַ֣ם — וְחַ֣ם and–warm לָהֶ֑ם — לָהֶ֑ם to–them וּלְאֶחָ֖ד — וּלְאֶחָ֖ד and–to–one אֵ֥יךְ — אֵ֥יךְ how יֵחָֽם׃ — יֵחָֽם׃ will–be–warm
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12 וְאִֽם־ — וְאִֽם־ and–if– יִתְקְפוֹ֙ — יִתְקְפוֹ֙ prevails הָאֶחָ֔ד — הָאֶחָ֔ד the–one הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם — הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם the–two יַעַמְד֣וּ — יַעַמְד֣וּ will–stand נֶגְדּ֑וֹ — נֶגְדּ֑וֹ against–him וְהַחוּט֙ — וְהַחוּט֙ and–the–cord הַֽמְשֻׁלָּ֔שׁ — הַֽמְשֻׁלָּ֔שׁ the–threefold לֹ֥א — לֹ֥א not בִמְהֵרָ֖ה — בִמְהֵרָ֖ה quickly יִנָּתֵֽק׃ — יִנָּתֵֽק׃ is–broken
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 ט֛וֹב — ט֛וֹב better יֶ֥לֶד — יֶ֥לֶד youth מִסְכֵּ֖ן — מִסְכֵּ֖ן poor וְחָכָ֑ם — וְחָכָ֑ם and–wise מִמֶּ֤לֶךְ — מִמֶּ֤לֶךְ than–king זָקֵן֙ — זָקֵן֙ old וּכְסִ֔יל — וּכְסִ֔יל and–foolish אֲשֶׁ֛ר — אֲשֶׁ֛ר who לֹא־ — לֹא־ not– יָדַ֥ע — יָדַ֥ע knows לְהִזָּהֵ֖ר — לְהִזָּהֵ֖ר to–be–warned עֽוֹד׃ — עֽוֹד׃ still
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14 כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ for– מִבֵּ֥ית — מִבֵּ֥ית from–house-of הָסוּרִ֖ים — הָסוּרִ֖ים the–prisoners יָצָ֣א — יָצָ֣א he–went-out לִמְלֹ֑ךְ — לִמְלֹ֑ךְ to–reign כִּ֛י — כִּ֛י for גַּ֥ם — גַּ֥ם indeed בְּמַלְכוּת֖וֹ — בְּמַלְכוּת֖וֹ in–his–kingdom נוֹלַ֥ד — נוֹלַ֥ד was–born רָֽשׁ׃ — רָֽשׁ׃ poor
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15 רָאִ֙יתִי֙ — רָאִ֙יתִי֙ I–saw אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים — הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים the–living הַֽמְהַלְּכִ֖ים — הַֽמְהַלְּכִ֖ים the–ones–walking תַּ֣חַת — תַּ֣חַת under הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ — הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ the–sun עִ֚ם — עִ֚ם with הַיֶּ֣לֶד — הַיֶּ֣לֶד the–youth הַשֵּׁנִ֔י — הַשֵּׁנִ֔י the–second אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר who יַעֲמֹ֖ד — יַעֲמֹ֖ד will–stand תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ — תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ in–his–place
I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16 אֵֽין־ — אֵֽין־ there-is-no– קֵ֣ץ — קֵ֣ץ end לְכָל־ — לְכָל־ to–all– הָעָ֗ם — הָעָ֗ם the–people לְכֹ֤ל — לְכֹ֤ל to–all אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ who– הָיָה֙ — הָיָה֙ were לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם — לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם before–them גַּ֥ם — גַּ֥ם also הָאַחֲרוֹנִ֖ים — הָאַחֲרוֹנִ֖ים the–later-ones לֹ֣א — לֹ֣א not יִשְׂמְחוּ־ — יִשְׂמְחוּ־ will–rejoice– ב֑וֹ — ב֑וֹ in–him כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ for– גַם־ — גַם־ also– זֶ֥ה — זֶ֥ה this הֶ֖בֶל — הֶ֖בֶל vapor וְרַעְי֥וֹן — וְרַעְי֥וֹן and–striving-after רֽוּחַ׃ — רֽוּחַ׃ wind
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
