The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,
2 וַיָּבֹ֨א — וַיָּבֹ֨א and–came חֲנָ֜נִי — חֲנָ֜נִי Hanani אֶחָ֧ד — אֶחָ֧ד one מֵאַחַ֛י — מֵאַחַ֛י of–my-brothers ה֥וּא — ה֥וּא he וַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים — וַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים and–men מִֽיהוּדָ֑ה — מִֽיהוּדָ֑ה from–Judah וָאֶשְׁאָלֵ֞ם — וָאֶשְׁאָלֵ֞ם and–I-asked-them עַל־ — עַל־ about– הַיְּהוּדִ֧ים — הַיְּהוּדִ֧ים the–Jews הַפְּלֵיטָ֛ה — הַפְּלֵיטָ֛ה the–remnant אֲשֶֽׁר־ — אֲשֶֽׁר־ who– נִשְׁאֲר֥וּ — נִשְׁאֲר֥וּ survived מִן־ — מִן־ from– הַשֶּׁ֖בִי — הַשֶּׁ֖בִי the–captivity וְעַל־ — וְעַל־ and–about– יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ — יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ Jerusalem
That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ — וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ and–they-said לִי֒ — לִי֒ to–me הַֽנִּשְׁאָרִ֞ים — הַֽנִּשְׁאָרִ֞ים the–survivors אֲשֶֽׁר־ — אֲשֶֽׁר־ who– נִשְׁאֲר֤וּ — נִשְׁאֲר֤וּ survived מִן־ — מִן־ from– הַשְּׁבִי֙ — הַשְּׁבִי֙ the–captivity שָׁ֣ם — שָׁ֣ם there בַּמְּדִינָ֔ה — בַּמְּדִינָ֔ה in–the–province בְּרָעָ֥ה — בְּרָעָ֥ה in–distress גְדֹלָ֖ה — גְדֹלָ֖ה great וּבְחֶרְפָּ֑ה — וּבְחֶרְפָּ֑ה and–in–reproach וְחוֹמַ֤ת — וְחוֹמַ֤ת and–wall-of יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ — יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ Jerusalem מְפֹרָ֔צֶת — מְפֹרָ֔צֶת broken-down וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ — וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ and–gates-her נִצְּת֥וּ — נִצְּת֥וּ burned בָאֵֽשׁ׃ — בָאֵֽשׁ׃ with–fire
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
4 וַיְהִ֞י — וַיְהִ֞י and–it-was כְּשָׁמְעִ֣י ׀ — כְּשָׁמְעִ֣י ׀ when–I-heard אֶת־ — אֶת־ – הַדְּבָרִ֣ים — הַדְּבָרִ֣ים the–words הָאֵ֗לֶּה — הָאֵ֗לֶּה the–these יָשַׁ֙בְתִּי֙ — יָשַׁ֙בְתִּי֙ I-sat וָֽאֶבְכֶּ֔ה — וָֽאֶבְכֶּ֔ה and–I-wept וָאֶתְאַבְּלָ֖ה — וָאֶתְאַבְּלָ֖ה and–I-mourned יָמִ֑ים — יָמִ֑ים days וָֽאֱהִ֥י — וָֽאֱהִ֥י and–I-was צָם֙ — צָם֙ fasting וּמִתְפַּלֵּ֔ל — וּמִתְפַּלֵּ֔ל and–praying לִפְנֵ֖י — לִפְנֵ֖י before אֱלֹהֵ֥י — אֱלֹהֵ֥י Elohim-of הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ — הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ the–heavens
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
5 וָאֹמַ֗ר — וָאֹמַ֗ר and–I-said אָֽנָּ֤א — אָֽנָּ֤א please יְהוָה֙ — יְהוָה֙ YHWH אֱלֹהֵ֣י — אֱלֹהֵ֣י Elohim-of הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם — הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם the–heavens הָאֵ֥ל — הָאֵ֥ל the–El הַגָּד֖וֹל — הַגָּד֖וֹל the–great וְהַנּוֹרָ֑א — וְהַנּוֹרָ֑א and–the–awesome שֹׁמֵ֤ר — שֹׁמֵ֤ר keeper-of הַבְּרִית֙ — הַבְּרִית֙ the–covenant וָחֶ֔סֶד — וָחֶ֔סֶד and–steadfast-love לְאֹהֲבָ֖יו — לְאֹהֲבָ֖יו to–those-loving-Him וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י — וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י and–to–those-keeping מִצְוֺתָֽיו׃ — מִצְוֺתָֽיו׃ commandments-His
And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
6 תְּהִ֣י — תְּהִ֣י let-be נָ֣א — נָ֣א please אָזְנְךָֽ־ — אָזְנְךָֽ־ ear-Your– קַשֶּׁ֣בֶת — קַשֶּׁ֣בֶת attentive וְֽעֵינֶ֪יךָ — וְֽעֵינֶ֪יךָ and–eyes-Your פְתֻוּח֟וֹת — פְתֻוּח֟וֹת open לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ — לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ to–hear אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– תְּפִלַּ֣ת — תְּפִלַּ֣ת prayer-of עַבְדְּךָ֡ — עַבְדְּךָ֡ servant-Your אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר which אָנֹכִי֩ — אָנֹכִי֩ I מִתְפַּלֵּ֨ל — מִתְפַּלֵּ֨ל praying לְפָנֶ֤יךָ — לְפָנֶ֤יךָ before-You הַיּוֹם֙ — הַיּוֹם֙ the–day יוֹמָ֣ם — יוֹמָ֣ם by-day וָלַ֔יְלָה — וָלַ֔יְלָה and–by-night עַל־ — עַל־ concerning– בְּנֵ֥י — בְּנֵ֥י sons-of יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל — יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ — עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ servants-Your וּמִתְוַדֶּ֗ה — וּמִתְוַדֶּ֗ה and–confessing עַל־ — עַל־ concerning– חַטֹּ֤אות — חַטֹּ֤אות sins-of בְּנֵֽי־ — בְּנֵֽי־ sons-of– יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ — יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר which חָטָ֣אנוּ — חָטָ֣אנוּ we-sinned לָ֔ךְ — לָ֔ךְ against-You וַאֲנִ֥י — וַאֲנִ֥י and–I וּבֵית־ — וּבֵית־ and–house-of– אָבִ֖י — אָבִ֖י father-my חָטָֽאנוּ׃ — חָטָֽאנוּ׃ sinned
Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.
7 חֲבֹ֖ל — חֲבֹ֖ל surely חָבַ֣לְנוּ — חָבַ֣לְנוּ we-acted-corruptly לָ֑ךְ — לָ֑ךְ against-You וְלֹא־ — וְלֹא־ and–not– שָׁמַ֣רְנוּ — שָׁמַ֣רְנוּ we-kept אֶת־ — אֶת־ – הַמִּצְוֺ֗ת — הַמִּצְוֺ֗ת the–commandments וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and– הַֽחֻקִּים֙ — הַֽחֻקִּים֙ the–statutes וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and– הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים — הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים the–judgments אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר which צִוִּ֖יתָ — צִוִּ֖יתָ You-commanded אֶת־ — אֶת־ – מֹשֶׁ֥ה — מֹשֶׁ֥ה Moses עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ — עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ servant-Your
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
8 זְכָר־ — זְכָר־ remember– נָא֙ — נָא֙ please אֶת־ — אֶת־ – הַדָּבָ֔ר — הַדָּבָ֔ר the–word אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר which צִוִּ֛יתָ — צִוִּ֛יתָ You-commanded אֶת־ — אֶת־ – מֹשֶׁ֥ה — מֹשֶׁ֥ה Moses עַבְדְּךָ֖ — עַבְדְּךָ֖ servant-Your לֵאמֹ֑ר — לֵאמֹ֑ר saying אַתֶּ֣ם — אַתֶּ֣ם you תִּמְעָ֔לוּ — תִּמְעָ֔לוּ act-unfaithfully אֲנִ֕י — אֲנִ֕י I אָפִ֥יץ — אָפִ֥יץ will-scatter אֶתְכֶ֖ם — אֶתְכֶ֖ם you בָּעַמִּֽים׃ — בָּעַמִּֽים׃ among-the–peoples
Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
9 וְשַׁבְתֶּ֣ם — וְשַׁבְתֶּ֣ם and–you-return אֵלַ֔י — אֵלַ֔י unto-Me וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ — וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ and–you-keep מִצְוֺתַ֔י — מִצְוֺתַ֔י commandments-My וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם — וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם and–you-do אֹתָ֑ם — אֹתָ֑ם them אִם־ — אִם־ if– יִהְיֶ֨ה — יִהְיֶ֨ה is נִֽדַּחֲכֶ֜ם — נִֽדַּחֲכֶ֜ם scattered-ones-your בִּקְצֵ֤ה — בִּקְצֵ֤ה at–end-of הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ — הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ the–heavens מִשָּׁ֣ם — מִשָּׁ֣ם from–there אֲקַבְּצֵ֔ם — אֲקַבְּצֵ֔ם I-will-gather-them [והבואתים] — [והבואתים] [and-I-will-bring-them] (וַהֲבִֽיאוֹתִים֙) — (וַהֲבִֽיאוֹתִים֙) (and-I-will-bring-them) אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– הַמָּק֔וֹם — הַמָּק֔וֹם the–place אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר which בָּחַ֔רְתִּי — בָּחַ֔רְתִּי I-chose לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן — לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן to–cause-to-dwell אֶת־ — אֶת־ – שְׁמִ֖י — שְׁמִ֖י name-My שָֽׁם׃ — שָֽׁם׃ there
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
10 וְהֵ֥ם — וְהֵ֥ם and–they עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ — עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ servants-Your וְעַמֶּ֑ךָ — וְעַמֶּ֑ךָ and–people-Your אֲשֶׁ֤ר — אֲשֶׁ֤ר whom פָּדִ֙יתָ֙ — פָּדִ֙יתָ֙ You-redeemed בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ — בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ by–power-Your הַגָּד֔וֹל — הַגָּד֔וֹל the–great וּבְיָדְךָ֖ — וּבְיָדְךָ֖ and–by–hand-Your הַחֲזָקָֽה׃ — הַחֲזָקָֽה׃ the–strong
Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
11 אָנָּ֣א — אָנָּ֣א please אֲדֹנָ֗י — אֲדֹנָ֗י Lord תְּהִ֣י — תְּהִ֣י let-be נָ֣א — נָ֣א please אָזְנְךָֽ־ — אָזְנְךָֽ־ ear-Your– קַ֠שֶּׁבֶת — קַ֠שֶּׁבֶת attentive אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– תְּפִלַּ֨ת — תְּפִלַּ֨ת prayer-of עַבְדְּךָ֜ — עַבְדְּךָ֜ servant-Your וְאֶל־ — וְאֶל־ and–unto– תְּפִלַּ֣ת — תְּפִלַּ֣ת prayer-of עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ — עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ servants-Your הַֽחֲפֵצִים֙ — הַֽחֲפֵצִים֙ the–ones-delighting לְיִרְאָ֣ה — לְיִרְאָ֣ה to–fear אֶת־ — אֶת־ – שְׁמֶ֔ךָ — שְׁמֶ֔ךָ name-Your וְהַצְלִֽיחָה־ — וְהַצְלִֽיחָה־ and–cause-to-prosper– נָּ֤א — נָּ֤א please לְעַבְדְּךָ֙ — לְעַבְדְּךָ֙ for–servant-Your הַיּ֔וֹם — הַיּ֔וֹם the–day וּתְנֵ֣הוּ — וּתְנֵ֣הוּ and–grant-him לְרַחֲמִ֔ים — לְרַחֲמִ֔ים to–mercies לִפְנֵ֖י — לִפְנֵ֖י before הָאִ֣ישׁ — הָאִ֣ישׁ the–man הַזֶּ֑ה — הַזֶּ֑ה the–this וַאֲנִ֛י — וַאֲנִ֛י and–I הָיִ֥יתִי — הָיִ֥יתִי was מַשְׁקֶ֖ה — מַשְׁקֶ֖ה cupbearer לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ — לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ to–the–king פ — פ P
O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.
