And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 וַיְהִ֞י — וַיְהִ֞י and–it-was שֶׁם־ — שֶׁם־ name-of– בְּנ֤וֹ — בְּנ֤וֹ his–son הַבְּכוֹר֙ — הַבְּכוֹר֙ the–firstborn יוֹאֵ֔ל — יוֹאֵ֔ל Joel וְשֵׁ֥ם — וְשֵׁ֥ם and–name-of מִשְׁנֵ֖הוּ — מִשְׁנֵ֖הוּ his–second אֲבִיָּ֑ה — אֲבִיָּ֑ה Abijah שֹׁפְטִ֖ים — שֹׁפְטִ֖ים judges בִּבְאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ — בִּבְאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ in–Beersheba
Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer–sheba.
3 וְלֹֽא־ — וְלֹֽא־ and–not– הָלְכ֤וּ — הָלְכ֤וּ walked בָנָיו֙ — בָנָיו֙ his–sons [בדרכו] — [בדרכו] [in-his-way] (בִּדְרָכָ֔יו) — (בִּדְרָכָ֔יו) (in–his–ways) וַיִּטּ֖וּ — וַיִּטּ֖וּ and–they-turned-aside אַחֲרֵ֣י — אַחֲרֵ֣י after הַבָּ֑צַע — הַבָּ֑צַע the–gain וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־ — וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־ and–they-took– שֹׁ֔חַד — שֹׁ֔חַד bribe וַיַּטּ֖וּ — וַיַּטּ֖וּ and–they-perverted מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ — מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ justice פ — פ [paragraph-break]
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ — וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ and–they-gathered כֹּ֖ל — כֹּ֖ל all זִקְנֵ֣י — זִקְנֵ֣י elders-of יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל — יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ — וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ and–they-came אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Samuel הָרָמָֽתָה׃ — הָרָמָֽתָה׃ the–Ramah-ward
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ — וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ and–they-said אֵלָ֗יו — אֵלָ֗יו unto–him הִנֵּה֙ — הִנֵּה֙ behold אַתָּ֣ה — אַתָּ֣ה you זָקַ֔נְתָּ — זָקַ֔נְתָּ are-old וּבָנֶ֕יךָ — וּבָנֶ֕יךָ and–your–sons לֹ֥א — לֹ֥א not הָלְכ֖וּ — הָלְכ֖וּ walk בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ — בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ in–your–ways עַתָּ֗ה — עַתָּ֗ה now שִֽׂימָה־ — שִֽׂימָה־ set– לָּ֥נוּ — לָּ֥נוּ for–us מֶ֛לֶךְ — מֶ֛לֶךְ king לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ — לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ to–judge-us כְּכָל־ — כְּכָל־ like–all– הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ — הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ the–nations
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 וַיֵּ֤רַע — וַיֵּ֤רַע and–it-was-evil הַדָּבָר֙ — הַדָּבָר֙ the–word בְּעֵינֵ֣י — בְּעֵינֵ֣י in–eyes-of שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר — כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר as–when אָמְר֔וּ — אָמְר֔וּ they-said תְּנָה־ — תְּנָה־ give– לָּ֥נוּ — לָּ֥נוּ to–us מֶ֖לֶךְ — מֶ֖לֶךְ king לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ — לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ to–judge-us וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל — וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל and–he-prayed שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Samuel אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– יְהוָֽה׃ — יְהוָֽה׃ YHWH פ — פ [paragraph-break]
But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–he-said יְהוָה֙ — יְהוָה֙ YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel שְׁמַע֙ — שְׁמַע֙ listen בְּק֣וֹל — בְּק֣וֹל to–voice-of הָעָ֔ם — הָעָ֔ם the–people לְכֹ֥ל — לְכֹ֥ל to–all אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ which– יֹאמְר֖וּ — יֹאמְר֖וּ they-say אֵלֶ֑יךָ — אֵלֶ֑יךָ unto–you כִּ֣י — כִּ֣י for לֹ֤א — לֹ֤א not אֹֽתְךָ֙ — אֹֽתְךָ֙ you מָאָ֔סוּ — מָאָ֔סוּ they-rejected כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ but– אֹתִ֥י — אֹתִ֥י me מָאֲס֖וּ — מָאֲס֖וּ they-rejected מִמְּלֹ֥ךְ — מִמְּלֹ֥ךְ from–reigning עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ — עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ over–them
And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 כְּכָֽל־ — כְּכָֽל־ like–all– הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים — הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים the–deeds אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ which– עָשׂ֗וּ — עָשׂ֗וּ they-did מִיּוֹם֩ — מִיּוֹם֩ from–the–day הַעֲלֹתִ֨י — הַעֲלֹתִ֨י I-brought-up אֹתָ֤ם — אֹתָ֤ם them מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ — מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ from–Egypt וְעַד־ — וְעַד־ and–unto– הַיּ֣וֹם — הַיּ֣וֹם the–day הַזֶּ֔ה — הַזֶּ֔ה the–this וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי — וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי and–they-forsook-me וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ — וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ and–they-served אֱלֹהִ֣ים — אֱלֹהִ֣ים gods אֲחֵרִ֑ים — אֲחֵרִ֑ים other כֵּ֛ן — כֵּ֛ן so הֵ֥מָּה — הֵ֥מָּה they עֹשִׂ֖ים — עֹשִׂ֖ים doing גַּם־ — גַּם־ also– לָֽךְ׃ — לָֽךְ׃ to–you
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 וְעַתָּ֖ה — וְעַתָּ֖ה and–now שְׁמַ֣ע — שְׁמַ֣ע listen בְּקוֹלָ֑ם — בְּקוֹלָ֑ם to–their–voice אַ֗ךְ — אַ֗ךְ surely כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ for– הָעֵ֤ד — הָעֵ֤ד warning תָּעִיד֙ — תָּעִיד֙ you-shall-warn בָּהֶ֔ם — בָּהֶ֔ם them וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ — וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ and–you-shall-declare לָהֶ֔ם — לָהֶ֔ם to–them מִשְׁפַּ֣ט — מִשְׁפַּ֣ט manner-of הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ — הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the–king אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר who יִמְלֹ֖ךְ — יִמְלֹ֖ךְ will-reign עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ — עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ over–them ס — ס [section-break]
Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר — וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and–he-said שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel אֵ֖ת — אֵ֖ת [obj] כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– דִּבְרֵ֣י — דִּבְרֵ֣י words-of יְהוָ֑ה — יְהוָ֑ה YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– הָעָ֕ם — הָעָ֕ם the–people הַשֹּׁאֲלִ֥ים — הַשֹּׁאֲלִ֥ים the–ones-asking מֵאִתּ֖וֹ — מֵאִתּ֖וֹ from–him מֶֽלֶךְ׃ — מֶֽלֶךְ׃ king ס — ס [section-break]
And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר — וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and–he-said זֶ֗ה — זֶ֗ה this יִֽהְיֶה֙ — יִֽהְיֶה֙ will-be מִשְׁפַּ֣ט — מִשְׁפַּ֣ט manner-of הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ — הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the–king אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר who יִמְלֹ֖ךְ — יִמְלֹ֖ךְ will-reign עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם — עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם over–you אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם — בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם your–sons יִקָּ֗ח — יִקָּ֗ח he-will-take וְשָׂ֥ם — וְשָׂ֥ם and–he-will-set לוֹ֙ — לוֹ֙ for–himself בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ — בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ in–his–chariot וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו — וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו and–among–his–horsemen וְרָצ֖וּ — וְרָצ֖וּ and–they-will-run לִפְנֵ֥י — לִפְנֵ֥י before מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃ — מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃ his–chariot
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 וְלָשׂ֣וּם — וְלָשׂ֣וּם and–to–set ל֔וֹ — ל֔וֹ for–himself שָׂרֵ֥י — שָׂרֵ֥י commanders-of אֲלָפִ֖ים — אֲלָפִ֖ים thousands וְשָׂרֵ֣י — וְשָׂרֵ֣י and–commanders-of חֲמִשִּׁ֑ים — חֲמִשִּׁ֑ים fifties וְלַחֲרֹ֤שׁ — וְלַחֲרֹ֤שׁ and–to–plow חֲרִישׁוֹ֙ — חֲרִישׁוֹ֙ his–plowing וְלִקְצֹ֣ר — וְלִקְצֹ֣ר and–to–reap קְצִיר֔וֹ — קְצִיר֔וֹ his–harvest וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת — וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת and–to–make כְּלֵֽי־ — כְּלֵֽי־ implements-of– מִלְחַמְתּ֖וֹ — מִלְחַמְתּ֖וֹ his–war וּכְלֵ֥י — וּכְלֵ֥י and–implements-of רִכְבּֽוֹ׃ — רִכְבּֽוֹ׃ his–chariotry
And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם — בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם your–daughters יִקָּ֑ח — יִקָּ֑ח he-will-take לְרַקָּח֥וֹת — לְרַקָּח֥וֹת for–perfumers וּלְטַבָּח֖וֹת — וּלְטַבָּח֖וֹת and–for–cooks וּלְאֹפֽוֹת׃ — וּלְאֹפֽוֹת׃ and–for–bakers
And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– שְׂ֠דֽוֹתֵיכֶם — שְׂ֠דֽוֹתֵיכֶם your–fields וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– כַּרְמֵיכֶ֧ם — כַּרְמֵיכֶ֧ם your–vineyards וְזֵיתֵיכֶ֛ם — וְזֵיתֵיכֶ֛ם and–your–olive-groves הַטּוֹבִ֖ים — הַטּוֹבִ֖ים the–good יִקָּ֑ח — יִקָּ֑ח he-will-take וְנָתַ֖ן — וְנָתַ֖ן and–he-will-give לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ — לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ to–his–servants
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 וְזַרְעֵיכֶ֥ם — וְזַרְעֵיכֶ֥ם and–your–seed וְכַרְמֵיכֶ֖ם — וְכַרְמֵיכֶ֖ם and–your–vineyards יַעְשֹׂ֑ר — יַעְשֹׂ֑ר he-will-tithe וְנָתַ֥ן — וְנָתַ֥ן and–he-will-give לְסָרִיסָ֖יו — לְסָרִיסָ֖יו to–his–officials וְלַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ — וְלַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ and–to–his–servants
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– עַבְדֵיכֶם֩ — עַבְדֵיכֶם֩ your–male-servants וְֽאֶת־ — וְֽאֶת־ and–[obj]– שִׁפְח֨וֹתֵיכֶ֜ם — שִׁפְח֨וֹתֵיכֶ֜ם your–female-servants וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– בַּחוּרֵיכֶ֧ם — בַּחוּרֵיכֶ֧ם your–young-men הַטּוֹבִ֛ים — הַטּוֹבִ֛ים the–good וְאֶת־ — וְאֶת־ and–[obj]– חֲמוֹרֵיכֶ֖ם — חֲמוֹרֵיכֶ֖ם your–donkeys יִקָּ֑ח — יִקָּ֑ח he-will-take וְעָשָׂ֖ה — וְעָשָׂ֖ה and–he-will-use לִמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃ — לִמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃ for–his–work
And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 צֹאנְכֶ֖ם — צֹאנְכֶ֖ם your–flock יַעְשֹׂ֑ר — יַעְשֹׂ֑ר he-will-tithe וְאַתֶּ֖ם — וְאַתֶּ֖ם and–you תִּֽהְיוּ־ — תִּֽהְיוּ־ will-be– ל֥וֹ — ל֥וֹ to–him לַעֲבָדִֽים׃ — לַעֲבָדִֽים׃ for–slaves
He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 וּזְעַקְתֶּם֙ — וּזְעַקְתֶּם֙ and–you-will-cry-out בַּיּ֣וֹם — בַּיּ֣וֹם on–the–day הַה֔וּא — הַה֔וּא the–that מִלִּפְנֵ֣י — מִלִּפְנֵ֣י from–before מַלְכְּכֶ֔ם — מַלְכְּכֶ֔ם your–king אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם — בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם you-chose לָכֶ֑ם — לָכֶ֑ם for–you וְלֹֽא־ — וְלֹֽא־ and–not– יַעֲנֶ֧ה — יַעֲנֶ֧ה will-answer יְהוָ֛ה — יְהוָ֛ה YHWH אֶתְכֶ֖ם — אֶתְכֶ֖ם you בַּיּ֥וֹם — בַּיּ֥וֹם on–the–day הַהֽוּא׃ — הַהֽוּא׃ the–that
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ — וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ and–they-refused הָעָ֔ם — הָעָ֔ם the–people לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ — לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ to–listen בְּק֣וֹל — בְּק֣וֹל to–voice-of שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ — וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ and–they-said לֹּ֔א — לֹּ֔א no כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י but אִם־ — אִם־ surely– מֶ֖לֶךְ — מֶ֖לֶךְ king יִֽהְיֶ֥ה — יִֽהְיֶ֥ה will-be עָלֵֽינוּ׃ — עָלֵֽינוּ׃ over–us
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 וְהָיִ֥ינוּ — וְהָיִ֥ינוּ and–we-will-be גַם־ — גַם־ also– אֲנַ֖חְנוּ — אֲנַ֖חְנוּ we כְּכָל־ — כְּכָל־ like–all– הַגּוֹיִ֑ם — הַגּוֹיִ֑ם the–nations וּשְׁפָטָ֤נוּ — וּשְׁפָטָ֤נוּ and–he-will-judge-us מַלְכֵּ֙נוּ֙ — מַלְכֵּ֙נוּ֙ our–king וְיָצָ֣א — וְיָצָ֣א and–he-will-go-out לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ — לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ before–us וְנִלְחַ֖ם — וְנִלְחַ֖ם and–he-will-fight אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– מִלְחֲמֹתֵֽנוּ׃ — מִלְחֲמֹתֵֽנוּ׃ our–battles
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע — וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע and–he-heard שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel אֵ֖ת — אֵ֖ת [obj] כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– דִּבְרֵ֣י — דִּבְרֵ֣י words-of הָעָ֑ם — הָעָ֑ם the–people וַֽיְדַבְּרֵ֖ם — וַֽיְדַבְּרֵ֖ם and–he-spoke-them בְּאָזְנֵ֥י — בְּאָזְנֵ֥י in–ears-of יְהוָֽה׃ — יְהוָֽה׃ YHWH פ — פ [paragraph-break]
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר — וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and–he-said יְהוָ֤ה — יְהוָ֤ה YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Samuel שְׁמַ֣ע — שְׁמַ֣ע listen בְּקוֹלָ֔ם — בְּקוֹלָ֔ם to–their–voice וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥ — וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥ and–you-shall-make-king לָהֶ֖ם — לָהֶ֖ם for–them מֶ֑לֶךְ — מֶ֑לֶךְ king וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–he-said שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Samuel אֶל־ — אֶל־ unto– אַנְשֵׁ֣י — אַנְשֵׁ֣י men-of יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל — יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel לְכ֖וּ — לְכ֖וּ go אִ֥ישׁ — אִ֥ישׁ each-man לְעִירֽוֹ׃ — לְעִירֽוֹ׃ to–his–city פ — פ [paragraph-break]
And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
