And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2 וַֽיְהִי֙ — וַֽיְהִי֙ and–it-was בַּיּ֣וֹם — בַּיּ֣וֹם in–the–day הַה֔וּא — הַה֔וּא the–that וְעֵלִ֖י — וְעֵלִ֖י and–Eli שֹׁכֵ֣ב — שֹׁכֵ֣ב lying בִּמְקֹמ֑וֹ — בִּמְקֹמ֑וֹ in–his-place [ועינו] — [ועינו] [ketiv-and–his-eye] (וְעֵינָיו֙) — (וְעֵינָיו֙) and–his-eyes הֵחֵ֣לּוּ — הֵחֵ֣לּוּ had-begun כֵה֔וֹת — כֵה֔וֹת to–grow-dim לֹ֥א — לֹ֥א not יוּכַ֖ל — יוּכַ֖ל he-was-able לִרְאֽוֹת׃ — לִרְאֽוֹת׃ to–see
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3 וְנֵ֤ר — וְנֵ֤ר and–lamp-of אֱלֹהִים֙ — אֱלֹהִים֙ Elohim טֶ֣רֶם — טֶ֣רֶם not-yet יִכְבֶּ֔ה — יִכְבֶּ֔ה was-extinguished וּשְׁמוּאֵ֖ל — וּשְׁמוּאֵ֖ל and–Shemuel שֹׁכֵ֑ב — שֹׁכֵ֑ב lying בְּהֵיכַ֣ל — בְּהֵיכַ֣ל in–temple-of יְהוָ֔ה — יְהוָ֔ה YHWH אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ where– שָׁ֖ם — שָׁ֖ם there אֲר֥וֹן — אֲר֥וֹן ark-of אֱלֹהִֽים׃ — אֱלֹהִֽים׃ Elohim פ — פ [para]
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4 וַיִּקְרָ֧א — וַיִּקְרָ֧א and–called יְהוָ֛ה — יְהוָ֛ה YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Shemuel וַיֹּ֥אמֶר — וַיֹּ֥אמֶר and–he-said הִנֵּֽנִי׃ — הִנֵּֽנִי׃ here-I-am
That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5 וַיָּ֣רָץ — וַיָּ֣רָץ and–he-ran אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– עֵלִ֗י — עֵלִ֗י Eli וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–he-said הִנְנִי֙ — הִנְנִי֙ here-I-am כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ for– קָרָ֣אתָ — קָרָ֣אתָ you-called לִּ֔י — לִּ֔י to–me וַיֹּ֥אמֶר — וַיֹּ֥אמֶר and–he-said לֹֽא־ — לֹֽא־ not– קָרָ֖אתִי — קָרָ֖אתִי I-called שׁ֣וּב — שׁ֣וּב return שְׁכָ֑ב — שְׁכָ֑ב lie-down וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ — וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ and–he-went וַיִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ — וַיִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ and–he-lay-down ס — ס [setuma]
And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6 וַיֹּ֣סֶף — וַיֹּ֣סֶף and–added יְהוָ֗ה — יְהוָ֗ה YHWH קְרֹ֣א — קְרֹ֣א to–call עוֹד֮ — עוֹד֮ again שְׁמוּאֵל֒ — שְׁמוּאֵל֒ Shemuel וַיָּ֤קָם — וַיָּ֤קָם and–he-arose שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Shemuel וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ — וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and–he-went אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– עֵלִ֔י — עֵלִ֔י Eli וַיֹּ֣אמֶר — וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and–he-said הִנְנִ֔י — הִנְנִ֔י here-I-am כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י for קָרָ֖אתָ — קָרָ֖אתָ you-called לִ֑י — לִ֑י to–me וַיֹּ֛אמֶר — וַיֹּ֛אמֶר and–he-said לֹֽא־ — לֹֽא־ not– קָרָ֥אתִי — קָרָ֥אתִי I-called בְנִ֖י — בְנִ֖י my-son שׁ֥וּב — שׁ֥וּב return שְׁכָֽב׃ — שְׁכָֽב׃ lie-down
And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7 וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל — וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל and–Shemuel טֶ֖רֶם — טֶ֖רֶם not-yet יָדַ֣ע — יָדַ֣ע knew אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– יְהוָ֑ה — יְהוָ֑ה YHWH וְטֶ֛רֶם — וְטֶ֛רֶם and–not-yet יִגָּלֶ֥ה — יִגָּלֶ֥ה was-revealed אֵלָ֖יו — אֵלָ֖יו to–him דְּבַר־ — דְּבַר־ word-of– יְהוָֽה׃ — יְהוָֽה׃ YHWH
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8 וַיֹּ֨סֶף — וַיֹּ֨סֶף and–added יְהוָ֥ה — יְהוָ֥ה YHWH קְרֹא־ — קְרֹא־ to–call– שְׁמוּאֵל֮ — שְׁמוּאֵל֮ Shemuel בַּשְּׁלִשִׁית֒ — בַּשְּׁלִשִׁית֒ the–third-time וַיָּ֙קָם֙ — וַיָּ֙קָם֙ and–he-arose וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ — וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and–he-went אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– עֵלִ֔י — עֵלִ֔י Eli וַיֹּ֣אמֶר — וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and–he-said הִנְנִ֔י — הִנְנִ֔י here-I-am כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י for קָרָ֖אתָ — קָרָ֖אתָ you-called לִ֑י — לִ֑י to–me וַיָּ֣בֶן — וַיָּ֣בֶן and–understood עֵלִ֔י — עֵלִ֔י Eli כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י that יְהוָ֖ה — יְהוָ֖ה YHWH קֹרֵ֥א — קֹרֵ֥א calling לַנָּֽעַר׃ — לַנָּֽעַר׃ to–the–child
And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר — וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and–said עֵלִ֣י — עֵלִ֣י Eli לִשְׁמוּאֵל֮ — לִשְׁמוּאֵל֮ to–Shemuel לֵ֣ךְ — לֵ֣ךְ go שְׁכָב֒ — שְׁכָב֒ lie-down וְהָיָה֙ — וְהָיָה֙ and–it-will-be אִם־ — אִם־ if– יִקְרָ֣א — יִקְרָ֣א He-calls אֵלֶ֔יךָ — אֵלֶ֔יךָ to–you וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ — וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ and–you-shall-say דַּבֵּ֣ר — דַּבֵּ֣ר speak יְהוָ֔ה — יְהוָ֔ה YHWH כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י for שֹׁמֵ֖עַ — שֹׁמֵ֖עַ hearing עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ — עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ Your-servant וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ — וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and–he-went שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Shemuel וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב — וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב and–he-lay-down בִּמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ — בִּמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ in–his-place
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 וַיָּבֹ֤א — וַיָּבֹ֤א and–came יְהוָה֙ — יְהוָה֙ YHWH וַיִּתְיַצַּ֔ב — וַיִּתְיַצַּ֔ב and–He-stood וַיִּקְרָ֥א — וַיִּקְרָ֥א and–He-called כְפַֽעַם־ — כְפַֽעַם־ as–time– בְּפַ֖עַם — בְּפַ֖עַם in–time שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל ׀ — שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל ׀ Shemuel שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Shemuel וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–said שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Shemuel דַּבֵּ֔ר — דַּבֵּ֔ר speak כִּ֥י — כִּ֥י for שֹׁמֵ֖עַ — שֹׁמֵ֖עַ hearing עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ — עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ Your-servant פ — פ [para]
And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
11 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר — וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and–said יְהוָה֙ — יְהוָה֙ YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Shemuel הִנֵּ֧ה — הִנֵּ֧ה behold אָנֹכִ֛י — אָנֹכִ֛י I עֹשֶׂ֥ה — עֹשֶׂ֥ה doing דָבָ֖ר — דָבָ֖ר thing בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל — בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in–Yisrael אֲשֶׁר֙ — אֲשֶׁר֙ which כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– שֹׁ֣מְע֔וֹ — שֹׁ֣מְע֔וֹ hearing-it תְּצִלֶּ֖ינָה — תְּצִלֶּ֖ינָה will-tingle שְׁתֵּ֥י — שְׁתֵּ֥י two-of אָזְנָֽיו׃ — אָזְנָֽיו׃ his-ears
And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12 בַּיּ֤וֹם — בַּיּ֤וֹם in–the–day הַהוּא֙ — הַהוּא֙ the–that אָקִ֣ים — אָקִ֣ים I-will-establish אֶל־ — אֶל־ against– עֵלִ֔י — עֵלִ֔י Eli אֵ֛ת — אֵ֛ת [obj] כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– אֲשֶׁ֥ר — אֲשֶׁ֥ר that דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי — דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי I-spoke אֶל־ — אֶל־ against– בֵּית֑וֹ — בֵּית֑וֹ his-house הָחֵ֖ל — הָחֵ֖ל beginning וְכַלֵּֽה׃ — וְכַלֵּֽה׃ and–finishing
In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13 וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי — וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי and–I-told ל֔וֹ — ל֔וֹ to–him כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ that– שֹׁפֵ֥ט — שֹׁפֵ֥ט judging אֲנִ֛י — אֲנִ֛י I-am אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– בֵּית֖וֹ — בֵּית֖וֹ his-house עַד־ — עַד־ until– עוֹלָ֑ם — עוֹלָ֑ם forever בַּעֲוֺ֣ן — בַּעֲוֺ֣ן for–iniquity אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ which– יָדַ֗ע — יָדַ֗ע he-knew כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ that– מְקַֽלְלִ֤ים — מְקַֽלְלִ֤ים cursing לָהֶם֙ — לָהֶם֙ for–themselves בָּנָ֔יו — בָּנָ֔יו his-sons וְלֹ֥א — וְלֹ֥א and–not כִהָ֖ה — כִהָ֖ה he-restrained בָּֽם׃ — בָּֽם׃ them
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14 וְלָכֵ֥ן — וְלָכֵ֥ן and–therefore נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי — נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי I-swore לְבֵ֣ית — לְבֵ֣ית to–house-of עֵלִ֑י — עֵלִ֑י Eli אִֽם־ — אִֽם־ if– יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר — יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר will-be-atoned עֲוֺ֧ן — עֲוֺ֧ן iniquity-of בֵּית־ — בֵּית־ house-of– עֵלִ֛י — עֵלִ֛י Eli בְּזֶ֥בַח — בְּזֶ֥בַח by–sacrifice וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה — וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה and–by–offering עַד־ — עַד־ until– עוֹלָֽם׃ — עוֹלָֽם׃ forever
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
15 וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב — וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב and–lay-down שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Shemuel עַד־ — עַד־ until– הַבֹּ֔קֶר — הַבֹּ֔קֶר the–morning וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח — וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח and–he-opened אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– דַּלְת֣וֹת — דַּלְת֣וֹת doors-of בֵּית־ — בֵּית־ house-of– יְהוָ֑ה — יְהוָ֑ה YHWH וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל — וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל and–Shemuel יָרֵ֔א — יָרֵ֔א was-afraid מֵהַגִּ֥יד — מֵהַגִּ֥יד to–tell אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– הַמַּרְאָ֖ה — הַמַּרְאָ֖ה the–vision אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– עֵלִֽי׃ — עֵלִֽי׃ Eli
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.
16 וַיִּקְרָ֤א — וַיִּקְרָ֤א and–called עֵלִי֙ — עֵלִי֙ Eli אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Shemuel וַיֹּ֖אמֶר — וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and–he-said שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל Shemuel בְּנִ֑י — בְּנִ֑י my-son וַיֹּ֖אמֶר — וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and–he-said הִנֵּֽנִי׃ — הִנֵּֽנִי׃ here-I-am
Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
17 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר — וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and–he-said מָ֤ה — מָ֤ה what הַדָּבָר֙ — הַדָּבָר֙ the–word אֲשֶׁ֣ר — אֲשֶׁ֣ר that דִּבֶּ֣ר — דִּבֶּ֣ר He-spoke אֵלֶ֔יךָ — אֵלֶ֔יךָ to–you אַל־ — אַל־ not– נָ֥א — נָ֥א please תְכַחֵ֖ד — תְכַחֵ֖ד hide מִמֶּ֑נִּי — מִמֶּ֑נִּי from–me כֹּ֣ה — כֹּ֣ה thus יַעֲשֶׂה־ — יַעֲשֶׂה־ may-do– לְּךָ֤ — לְּךָ֤ to–you אֱלֹהִים֙ — אֱלֹהִים֙ Elohim וְכֹ֣ה — וְכֹ֣ה and–thus יוֹסִ֔יף — יוֹסִ֔יף may-He-add אִם־ — אִם־ if– תְּכַחֵ֤ד — תְּכַחֵ֤ד you-hide מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ — מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ from–me דָּבָ֔ר — דָּבָ֔ר word מִכָּל־ — מִכָּל־ from–all– הַדָּבָ֖ר — הַדָּבָ֖ר the–word אֲשֶׁר־ — אֲשֶׁר־ that– דִּבֶּ֥ר — דִּבֶּ֥ר He-spoke אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ — אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ to–you
And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
18 וַיַּגֶּד־ — וַיַּגֶּד־ and–told– ל֤וֹ — ל֤וֹ to–him שְׁמוּאֵל֙ — שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Shemuel אֶת־ — אֶת־ [obj]– כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– הַדְּבָרִ֔ים — הַדְּבָרִ֔ים the–words וְלֹ֥א — וְלֹ֥א and–not כִחֵ֖ד — כִחֵ֖ד he-hid מִמֶּ֑נּוּ — מִמֶּ֑נּוּ from–him וַיֹּאמַ֕ר — וַיֹּאמַ֕ר and–he-said יְהוָ֣ה — יְהוָ֣ה YHWH ה֔וּא — ה֔וּא He הַטּ֥וֹב — הַטּ֥וֹב the–good בְּעֵינָ֖ו — בְּעֵינָ֖ו in–His-eyes יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ — יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ let-Him-do פ — פ [para]
And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.
19 וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל — וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל and–grew שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Shemuel וַֽיהוָה֙ — וַֽיהוָה֙ and–YHWH הָיָ֣ה — הָיָ֣ה was עִמּ֔וֹ — עִמּ֔וֹ with–him וְלֹֽא־ — וְלֹֽא־ and–not– הִפִּ֥יל — הִפִּ֥יל He-let-fall מִכָּל־ — מִכָּל־ from–all– דְּבָרָ֖יו — דְּבָרָ֖יו his-words אָֽרְצָה׃ — אָֽרְצָה׃ to-ground
And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20 וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ — וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ and–knew כָּל־ — כָּל־ all– יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל — יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Yisrael מִדָּ֖ן — מִדָּ֖ן from–Dan וְעַד־ — וְעַד־ and–unto– בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע — בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע Beersheva כִּ֚י — כִּ֚י that נֶאֱמָ֣ן — נֶאֱמָ֣ן faithful שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Shemuel לְנָבִ֖יא — לְנָבִ֖יא as–prophet לַיהוָֽה׃ — לַיהוָֽה׃ to–YHWH
And all Israel from Dan even to Beer–sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
21 וַיֹּ֥סֶף — וַיֹּ֥סֶף and–added יְהוָ֖ה — יְהוָ֖ה YHWH לְהֵרָאֹ֣ה — לְהֵרָאֹ֣ה to–appear בְשִׁלֹ֑ה — בְשִׁלֹ֑ה in–Shiloh כִּֽי־ — כִּֽי־ for– נִגְלָ֨ה — נִגְלָ֨ה revealed-Himself יְהוָ֧ה — יְהוָ֧ה YHWH אֶל־ — אֶל־ to– שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל — שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל Shemuel בְּשִׁל֖וֹ — בְּשִׁל֖וֹ in–Shiloh בִּדְבַ֥ר — בִּדְבַ֥ר by–word-of יְהוָֽה׃ — יְהוָֽה׃ YHWH פ — פ [para]
And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
